there is a story in china, about a young man who was taught by his shifu, the xiao (vertical flute thing). he stayed with his teacher from 5 onwards for 15 years and became renown throughout the entire city for his excellent xiao skills. together with his teacher, he travelled far in the kingdom, so that everybody knew of the beauty of the xiao. many came, crowding beneath makeshift stages simply to hear the melodies which guided them to unknown worlds. with time, his fame grew, and even the emperor claimed that beside the music of his xiao-playing, everything else seemed insignificant.

but one day, the shifu fell ill and died. he was, after all, an old man and the ceaseless travelling had taken its heavy toll on him. the young man, being heartbroken, after giving his shifu a stately funeral, decided that the only way to show his shifu the utmost respect was to never play the xiao again. he broke his xiao into two, buried one part with his shifu and the other he kept with him all the time. he never found another teacher, nor did he ever touch another xiao. and the kingdom never knew beauty again.
& i embraced the world;
